- Helps you decide whether EVE is truly for you or not
- Helps you understand the game from a broader perspective
- Helps you find your way through both the plethora of content and the community itself
I hope to write that guide one day. Chances are, this one is NOT one of them. Still, if you're interested, I'll try and shed some light on those questions.
The Personality Test
Let's start with 'should I play at all?' Well, you definitely should. There are a great number of activities that besides providing good time sink, can help you leap into a new social life. Despite everything that is resounding in the media, jokes and bad press aside, EVE certainly has something to offer you. There's plenty of text about what you can do in the game, so I won't bother listing every single thing up. Let's dwell on something else first - the player traits.
- Do you enjoy complexity? There will be a lot of stuff going on right from the start. You'll be bombarded with information continuously regardless of it being meaningful to you or not. Can you handle it in a video game?
- Can you move away from prejudice? In EVE, there are a lot of things that may not work according to your though process. It is on you to sort through it and get it.
- Are you patient enough to learn by trial and error? Most of the activities will present plenty of opportunities to failure. It is entirely up to you to learn how things work out, it can't really be taught. Do you enjoy this?
- Can you be bothered to research? If you want to do something right, you must gather information on it. Uninformed decisions usually result in a nice explosion and/or decreased wallet.
- Are you mature enough to take losses for what they are? When you lose something, it's usually because another player has a competitive advantage over you, or God forbid you commit an error during execution of certain activity. Can you laugh at them (this is just a game afterall), learn from them and make these losses a benefit?
- Are you open-minded and self-sufficient? Sticking to well tried practices is just dull, whereas you can't purely rely on others, EVE simply does not work that way. Strike on your own ventures, and try to maintain your freedom.
- Do you admit your faults? Because admitting and trying to correct them is going to make you much happier with both yourself and the game.
- Can you plan ahead? It is not a requirement, but EVE rewards good plans and punishes the foolhardy.
If you can answer those questions with a yes, you are in for a hell of a ride, enjoy your capsuleer career, because you will surely be more successful than many others before you!
Had any 'NO'-s in there? Don't be disappointed. And don't be scared off. These traits can be learned, as well as things that you need them for ignored.
EVE is a giant sandbox. As long as you remember that you can do anything you want within it and so can everybody else, you'll be enjoying it big time!
